Implications for Indian Students

Discover the impact of Australia’s latest student visa rule change on Indian students. As of May 10, 2024, aspiring students will need to demonstrate savings amounting to at least ₹16,29,964 to qualify for a visa.

Australia has revised its visa regulations, making it more challenging for international students to obtain visas. The adjustment involves an increase in the minimum savings requirement, now set at 75% of the national minimum wage. Beginning May 10, 2024, students must exhibit proof of possessing a minimum of A$29,710 (₹16,29,964) to be eligible for a visa. This alteration aims to ensure students can adequately cover living expenses while pursuing studies in Australia, particularly during non-class periods when they may engage in employment opportunities. Meeting this criterion will enable students to better strategize and plan their academic journey.

This marks the second adjustment in seven months, following a prior raise from A$21,041 (₹11,54,361) to A$24,505 (₹13,44,405) in October. The Australian government’s decision to tighten visa regulations comes in response to concerns regarding an influx of individuals to the country post the COVID-19 restrictions lifted in 2022, leading to challenges such as housing shortages.

Furthermore, the government has implemented various policies to regulate student visas, including raising English language proficiency requirements and preventing visa extensions through loopholes.

In addition to these changes, the Australian government has introduced several measures to support international students, including replacing the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with a Genuine Student (GS) requirement and extending Post-Study Work Rights (PSWR) by up to two years. Moreover, there are specific criteria regarding minimum total scores, limitations on work hours, and restrictions on simultaneous enrollment in multiple courses. These measures aim to ensure the integrity of the student visa system and provide a conducive environment for international students to pursue their educational aspirations in Australia.
