“Sapphire,” the latest track by British pop sensation Ed Sheeran, has taken the internet by storm, racking up over 50 million views on YouTube within just two weeks of its release. The song stands out for several reasons: it was filmed in India, features a powerful collaboration with Indian music icon Arijit Singh, and includes a surprise cameo by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Now, Sheeran has finally revealed how he managed to bring SRK on board for this special appearance.
In a BTS video, shared on Instagram, Ed is seen recording his Hindi lines for Sapphire in a studio. “This is the first time I am singing in Hindi,” he told his team. It was that moment when director Siddharth Anand, who worked with SRK in Pathaan, informed Ed that the actor was waiting to meet him at his house, but he had to go to attend a wedding at 10:30.
Later, Ed visited Shah Rukh’s residence with his father and close friend Nic.
“And then he (SRK) came back, and after that, I asked, ‘Could you just cameo in the video?’” Ed recalls in the clip. To his delight, the superstar instantly agreed. After filming the scene, the two shared a warm, heartfelt hug, sealing a memorable moment in their cross-cultural collaboration.
It all began when Shah Rukh Khan invited Ed Sheeran to his home for a casual game of paddle. What started as a friendly match soon turned into an unexpected spark of creative collaboration. “There is no need to provide background for who Shah Rukh Khan is; I believe he is the top or second most renowned person in the world. He invited me to his home to play paddle. So we played paddle for about 3 hours,” said Ed Sheeran.
Their conversation took a creative turn when SRK pitched an idea. “He offered me a concept and said, ‘Do it whenever,’” Ed recalled. “And I said, ‘Well, I’m here now—how about dinner tomorrow?’” By the time dinner rolled around, the musical magic had already begun. “Before I knew it, I was singing the entire song in Hindi!” Ed laughed.
Ed Sheeran recently shared a behind-the-scenes video on YouTube, documenting the making of Sapphire and his journey across India. The video captures vibrant moments from the shoot in Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai, offering fans a glimpse into the creative process behind the hit track.
Sapphire also features a special appearance by Arijit Singh, who not only lends his vocals, especially for a Punjabi phrase in the song, but also joins Ed on a bike ride in the official music video.
Excitingly, Ed announced that a Punjabi version of Sapphire is in the works. While fans eagerly await its release, an official date is yet to be confirmed.
