Before & After – A New Series On My Substack, Charting The Development Of Renowned Perfumers –

This is almost pointless. A fact that’s slightly ironic given that, on paper, the idea looks as though it shouldn’t be the least bit tricky to pull off. Step one: think of a perfumer. Step two: find their first and their most recent compositions. And step three: compare them with each other. Try to work out how the creator’s style has developed. Ascertain the ways in which their approach to perfumery has evolved over time. That sort of thing. You wouldn’t even have to restrict the concept to perfumers. For instance, you could choose to look at a brand: compare their latest release with their debut. Or perhaps even a fragrance style: say, a recent oud with an early example of the genre. Shouldn’t be too difficult, right?
