My “three you must be wearing” selections reflects my own diverse taste in music and perfume; I like to find the good things, those that talk to me and have a voice with something to say to fit my mood and feel. That’s why I’m a fan of what Art Meets Art is doing, picking the music that speaks to them and making the perfumes sing with a French touch. Now its time for my scented playlist.

DSM-Firmenich Frank Voelkl and J’s image of Art Meets Art Lilac Wine.
Lilac Wine (Frank Voelkl) 2017: Watching ‘It’s Never Over,’ the recent documentary about Jeff Buckley, had me pulling Lilac Wine off my shelf. Throughout the film you see Jeff Buckley cover songs, taking those classic structures and tracks of Nina Simone or Bob Dylan and making them his own. Principal Perfumer DSM-Firmenich’s Frank Voelkl does this with the classic fougère giving us a unique interpretation with Lilac Wine. More than that ,he captures the minimal elegance and flow of Jeff Buckley voice and guitar playing, letting the notes flow over each other as the elements combine. You feel its beautiful aromatic melody, as lavender rich with plum and sage sing through the sweet floral notes the guitar, letting the strings and woods vibrate forming a cosy enveloping aromatic haze. Violet leaf adds reverb, giving space and depth letting its subtle green woody facets add a touch of ennui playing off the sweet romance of the delicate florals. Lilac Wine intoxicates you with its herbal liquor aroma, capturing that rich smoothness of Jeff Buckley’s voice, while letting the rougher woods feel like the controlled throaty rage he could unleash with command. Frank Voelkl uses darkness and light, with smooth and rough textures to capture these beautiful facets of Jeff Buckley’s performance and makes them all sing in his way in the stunning Lilac Wine. Lilac Wine is a fougère that sings its own beautiful melody. Notes: lavender, violet, plum, cognac composition, clary sage, freesia, cedarwood, musk, moss.

DSM-Firmenich Fabrice Pellegrin and J’s image of Art Meets Art Like a Virgin Unplugged.
Like a Virgin Unplugged (Fabrice Pellegrin)2024: Hitting next on the Art Meets Art playlist takes us to a different style as we’re enveloped in Like a Virgin Unplugged’s floral summer mood. Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin sprays us with pop tones loaded with desire, capturing Madonna’s classic, Like A Virgin, especially for me her iconic 1984 MTV awards performance. Art Meets Art has two versions of this classic pop track, Alberto Morillas’ Like a Virgin captures the youthful feel of a pop summer hit and the new innocent teenage fans it found, before the world got to see her performance. Fabrice Pellegrin takes this pop innocence and makes the song’s lyrics more overt. His imagining of Like a Virgin adding a beautiful dose of sensual orange blossom that drips over you like a creamy vanilla milkshake. The orange blossom shines in Like a Virgin Unplugged, it’s the main melody sung over the creamy groove with softer floral freesia flourishes referencing it nicely back into Morillas’ composition, while still feeling like a whole new mix. You can feel the synths shimmer capturing the champagne like sparkle of the orange blossom, its bitter green facets seem to thicken the milkiness of the vanilla shake into a dense silky sensation. It makes Like a Virgin Unplugged drape over you in an elegant way while the creaminess of the vanilla and florals feels like flashes of Madonna’s body from her disheveled wedding gown from her Like a Virgin 1984 MTV awards performance. Like a Virgin Unplugged is a sensual seductive pop perfume that’s feels like summer loving and a melody I always enjoy. Notes: Bergamot, freesia, Moroccan orange blossom, milky composition, vanilla.

DSM-Firmenich Senior Perfumer Christophe Raynaud and J’s image of Art Meets Art Sexual Healing.
Sexual Healing (Christophe Raynaud) 2017: As the final track of this Art Meets Art playlist spins were greeted by the smooth rich honeyed tones of Sexual Healing, which captures all the depth and timbre of Marvin Gaye’s iconic powerful voice. Sexual Healing has a classy suave quality with its vanilla tobacco aromas dripping with honeyed floral flourishes and seems to move at the same smooth rhythm of the songs slinky 98bpm. Ginger brings out the warm Motown Production feel, giving everything an electric glow that wears like silk as the honey melts through it. Tobacco’s rich complexities match that of Gaye’s voice, dark rich stone fruits merge with cacao facets giving a richness to Sexual Healing that’s smoothed out into a creamy croon that seems to have endless sustain. It’s got woody facets too adding a casual power and body, picking out vanilla’s woody side. Ambroxan adds that classic Holland-Dozier-Holland Motown production sheen to Sexual Healing, it doesn’t overwhelm rather it pulls everything into the mix and tweaks the eq’s making Sexual Healing feel full and shine. DSM-Firmenich Perfumer Christophe Raynaud yet again captures the feel and vibe of the music and Marvin Gaye’s voice’ with the honeyed waxiness bringing that purr of sexual desire that oozes from the song, the kind that makes me wanna holla, especially when I get that feeling I reach for Sexual Healing. Notes: honey, ginger, tobacco absolute, vanilla, ambrox.
