I’ll read anything: biographies, historical fiction, military, self-help (not that I need it), poetry, young adult, science fiction, manga, health & wellness, horror, etc. Truthfully, I’ve never read a manga book, but if someone recommended one, I would read it. Truthfully, I don’t have any friends that would recommend a manga book.

When reading different fiction varieties, an occasional love story sneaks its way into my stack. Romance is not a genre I love (pun intended), but I consider reading a cheesy love story research for our annual Hallmark Holiday Movie Pitch competition (Who doesn’t love a good Hallmark holiday movie? You are a screenwriter for the Hallmark Network. The holiday season is just around the corner. The company executives want you to pitch them your best Hallmark Holiday Movie idea – 2022 Submission, 2023 Submission, and 2024 Submission).

Love stories have many tropes. They’re important to understand if you want Hallmark executives to invest in your school winning movie pitch submissions (back to back champion), but they’re exhausting when you encounter them in every summer beach read.

Lip biting is the Swiss army knife of romance novel tropes.

Attraction – Sally bites her lower lip as she notices Billy’s physique from across the coffee shop
Flirtation – Sally bites her lower lip while dabbing a napkin on Billy’s Oxford shirt after spilling her soy latte on it
Nervousness – While waiting outside the sushi restaurant for Billy, Sally bites her lower lip playing out every first date worst case scenario
Hesitation – When Billy asks Sally if she wants to come inside for a drink, she bites her lower lip contemplating the consequences of her decision

Replacing Lip Biting

Attraction – Sally uses her index finger to write her name in cursive in her eyebrows as she notices Billy’s physique from across the coffee shop
Flirtation – Sally folds her left ear in half while dabbing a napkin on Billy’s Oxford shirt after spilling her soy latte on it
Nervousness – While waiting outside the sushi restaurant for Billy, Sally tries to lick her elbow playing out every first date worst case scenario
Hesitation – When Billy asks Sally if she wants to come inside for a drink, she partakes in a thumb war with herself contemplating the consequences of her decision

Before you gawk at my romantic replacements, there was a time when lip biting sounded just as strange as eyebrow signing, ear folding, elbow licking, and thumb civil wars.
