From the archives: The Guerlain Aqua Allegoria range always gets my attention for its beautiful gilded bottles and even more for the fact that I’ve never met one that I didn’t like. Flora Salvaggia is an arrestingly stop-in-your-tracks floral that brings springtime to your skin even in a downpour. Imagine a watercolour still life painting with violets, iris and watermelons. Now imagine the rain has smudged it so that the beautiful pinks and purples and greens all run into one another. This is what Flora Salvaggia smells like.

It also reminds me of being outside in the evening. You can smell the hedges and flowers in the gardens as you walk past, but there is a pleasing cool dampness in the air. One of the notes is listed as wildflowers, and to my nose this was Herb Robert, Buddleia and Bluebells: all the flowers I used to pick for my Mum when I was little. I can still see them in a little Ski yoghurt pot. A soft powdery flourish rounds off the base notes and lingers languorously.

Flora Salvaggia feels so right that I almost feel that Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk made it just for me. It has a quality that is both retro and modern, pleasing both the palate of this 70s child and The Youth of Today. When a perfume makes you feel like that, then you know you need to get a bottle in your collection. And a back up too.
