How long cologne lasts is a question that every fragrance enthusiast has asked themselves at one point or another. Some fragrances linger throughout an evening, while others fade before the day has even started. The answer to this question is created by an interesting mix of physics, artistry, and self-accountability, everything from oil concentration to how you apply it to your skin.

Scent longevity is the amount of time it takes before the aroma of a scent becomes undetectable on your skin after you put it on. Scent longevity seems mysterious, but it is really based on chemistry, namely, how quickly the different aroma molecules evaporate.

Each cologne is created and constructed layer by layer, often referred to as notes:

• The first impressions are called the top notes, which are very bright but volatile, such as citrus notes, herbal notes, or very light spices, which dissipate after a short duration of about an hour.

• The heart notes will emerge next, often florals, spices, or sometimes green notes, which will endure for several hours.

• Finally, the basenotes will ground the fragrance to anchor it, like woods, amber, musk, and vanilla, and they will often be present for as long as a whole day.

Generally speaking, lighter components will evaporate more quickly, and heavier notes will remain for longer. Another one of the biggest concerns and factors that dictates how long a cologne will last is the oil-to-base alcohol ratio in the formula (also called concentration). A scent formula will last longer with more oils included in the formulation.

• Eau de Cologne is regarded as light and refreshing, and it will have 2-5% oils and last for approximately 2-4 hours. 

• Eau de Toilette is a medium strength mix with 5-15% oil, and it lasts for around 4-6 hours.

• Eau de Parfum is a stronger fragrance, lasting longer with 15-20% oil concentration, which would last a little longer for about 8 hours.
