A dozen locations in Jammu, including the airstrip, were targeted by artillery fire, and drone and missile attacks from the Pakistani side on Thursday evening, just a day after India struck terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The security agencies said that Pakistan launched eight missiles targeting the Jammu civil airport, Samba, RS Pura, Arnia, and nearby military installations. However, all missiles were effectively intercepted by the S-400 air defence system.
“Military Stations of Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur in proximity to the International Boundary, in Jammu & Kashmir targeted by Pakistan using missiles and drones. No losses. Threat neutralised by Indian Armed Forces as per SoP with kinetic and non-kinetic means,” the Integrated Defence Staff said.
The drones and missiles were neutralised mid-air through the coordinated deployment of advanced technologies, said sources, adding that no damage or casualties were reported.
“We were aware of such an attempt and we were fully prepared to thwart these attempts from the Pakistani side. Though it’s an evolving situation, we have neutralised all threats coming from Pakistan. So far eight projectiles, mostly surface-to-surface missiles, have been shot down by our air defence mechanisms,” the defence sources told CNN-News18.
Pakistani Drones Shot Down
Two Pakistani drones were intercepted and downed near Jammu University. Reports confirmed that two Pakistan drones were also shot down in the Khor area of Jammu.
Further, reports emerged of artillery shelling in Kupwara, Udhampur, along with shelling targeting the air base in Pathankot. All nearby areas were also targeted.
In a prompt response, Indian defence systems countered the targeted strikes and activated air raid sirens, which were heard in Akhnoor and Kishtwar in the Jammu Division, where a complete blackout was also implemented.
CNN-News18 has learnt that following the activation of the air defence systems, internet and electricity services were suspended across Jammu city.
Defence sources said that visuals over Jammu resemble a Hamas-style rocket barrage, with multiple low-cost projectiles fired simultaneously.
Huge Success For India’s Air Defence
Security agencies confirmed that the S-400 air defence system successfully intercepted all missiles and drones launched from Pakistan, marking a significant achievement for India’s air defence capabilities, as none of the incoming threats reached their intended targets.
All remnants of the destroyed missiles and drones were recovered and areas were sealed.
Further, India’s air defence system shot down Pakistan’s F-16 aircraft after Islamabad launched air raids at multiple places across Jammu and Kashmir.
Defence sources informed CNN-News18 that the S-400 air defence system played a key role in countering aerial threats from Pakistan, which has been reeling after Operation Sindoor—India’s retaliatory strikes on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Developed by Russia’s Almaz-Antey and inducted into India’s strategic air defence framework, the S-400 is considered one of the most sophisticated long-range air defence systems globally.
It is engineered to detect, track, and eliminate a variety of airborne threats, including drones, fighter jets, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, offering layered defence across multiple ranges and altitudes.
Advisory Issued For Jammu
In view of the Pakistani missile and drone attacks, the Jammu Police issued an urgent advisory for residents:
- All citizens requested to switch off all types of lights during the blackout period. Stay indoors in safe places.
- No unnecessary vehicular movement should be taken.
- There is no need for panic. Authorities will have the situation under control.
- We request everyone not to spread rumours or unverified information, as it can create unnecessary panic.
Amid ongoing Pakistani attacks, authorities have issued Control Room numbers for Jammu district: 0191-2571912 and 0191-2571616, for emergency assistance and information.
Pakistan Attacks Srinagar, Jaisalmer
After air raids in the Jammu region, the Pakistani side resorted to strikes in Srinagar, prompting the Indian defence system to deliver a strong and effective response.
The Pakistani army also resorted to firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, in areas near Poonch and Rajouri, sources told CNN-New18.
Earlier, in response to Operation Sindoor, the Pakistani army launched unprovoked firing across the LoC, in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor, killing at least 13 people, including four children and a soldier.
Red flares were also observed in the sky over Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, as air defence systems were activated to counter a potential aerial threat.
