Maison Orveda and INFINIMENT COTY PARIS boutique

While photographing stores on Madison Avenue’s Upper East Side for my ÇaFleureBon Guide to Perfume Shopping in New York City in 2024, I fortuitously found the stylishly designed Maison Orveda boutique, which Coty opened for the French biotech skincare brand. The boutique has an immersive room dedicated within the new multi-level space for the Infiniment Coty Paris Collection. The boutique opened in September, and while it has been flying below the radar, my guess, not for long. This is not a store in the traditional sense. more of an installation crossed with a gallery. To highlight the Infiniment Coty Paris collection, a room within the boutique is set up to experience it. Outsized sculptural flowers emit the collection’s fourteen distinct perfumes through an innovative diffusion method. A separate room displays the collection and corresponding art. The two-story New York boutique has a dedicated lounge area, a product space, and a grand staircase that leads up to an event space that can accommodate masterclasses, art exhibits, and host private events.

While Coty Inc. is an American multinational beauty company, the love for Paris is apparent, naming the new collection INFINIMENT COTY PARIS. The collection was launched at their first global pop-up in the Marais district of Paris which was created and debuted in March of 2024. The location “will be open until the brand finds a space that could be a permanent fit,” according to Coty’s communications department. Since that press announcement, I’ve been advised that the current location might become the permanent location.

Fragrance aficionados associate COTY with vintage perfumery. And rightly so. Founded in Paris in 1904 by François Coty, the Coty name has been one of, if not the most venerated, in perfumery. Monsieur Francois Coty (born Joseph Spoturno) is revered as the grandfather of modern fragrances. He created masterpieces of olfactory art, including Chypre and L’Origan, which are considered to be some of the most influential fragrant compositions ever. He is credited for creating the chypre category. Coty was the first perfumer to commercialize scents made with both natural ingredients and synthetic components—a practice contemporary perfumers follow to this day. And he is credited with creating modern perfumery when he invented and energized what perfume packaging is today. An example of that is his partnership with Baccarat and Lalique to create perfume bottles at a time when perfume bottles looked similar and had a pharmaceutical appearance.

Coty, despite not releasing a fragrance in over sixty years, has prospered as the licensing agent for forty brands, including Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Boss, Burberry, Gucci, and many others. So now Coty has decided to return to their French roots, not to dwell on the past, but to salute the future. They celebrated their 120th anniversary last year by launching a new chapter with the highly awaited fragrance brand, INFINIMENT COTY PARIS. There will be other boutiques launched in other countries, and other outlets will be carrying the Collection.

The collection was conceived by Sue Nabi, Coty’s CEO, and Nicolas Vu, with whom she previously founded the premium skincare brand Orveda, licensed to Coty. Regarding production, INFINIMENT COTY PARIS is the first collection to be manufactured entirely with 100% alcohol derived from carbon emissions captured through a bio-fermentation process. The line is made up of four elements: concentrated perfume, purified water, alcohol, and a process called “molecular aura”. The patent-pending formula is designed to modulate the evaporation of olfactory molecules, releasing the top, heart, and base notes all at once, which extends the signature scent of each perfume up to 30 hours by blending synthetic and natural ingredients. All but one of the fragrances are 20% concentration. Each of the 14 INFINIMENT COTY PARIS perfumes has a molecular aura and was built from Nabi and Vu’s African and Asian roots, memories, and inspirations, following Coty’s three-pronged approach to fragrance: scientific performance, emotional connection, and sustainability. This collection of fourteen fragrances is divided into three phases, from the freshest to the most intense accords: I am Dawn, I am Day, and I am Dusk, aiming to cover a broad olfactory spectrum. Each fragrance is linked to a specific emotion, including sensuality, pleasure, tenderness, self-esteem, and more.  Released on March 2nd, 2024, to the French public, INFINIMENT COTY PARIS has also been strategically understated. This is a collection for the long run.

Pillard bottles

The Pillard bottles come in crisp white packaging shaped in the letter “I,” designed by Vu. Broken into three categories (I am Dawn, I am Day, and I am Dusk), the brighter, more intimate notes of the Dawn and Day perfumes transition to something deeper and more sensual as they flow to Dusk. Noir Ences and Encore Une Fois are Nabi’s favorites in the collection.  What I love is that the refillable bottles can be stacked together to create a canvas for innovative artworks. The practice is called “artcycling.” This focus on art led to an ongoing partnership with the 1-54 Art Fair, an annual event showcasing contemporary African Art in London, New York, and Marrakech.

And while it would have been convenient for Coty to have looked to the past for inspiration, I give Coty kudos for moving into the future with this collection. I decided to focus on three of the fourteen in the collection for a review. Not necessarily my three favorites, but three that best represented each of the three categories

INFINIMENT COTY PARIS I am Dawn J’ai Trois Amours (Alberto Morillas & Honorine Blanc): Olfactory family: Fruity floral / Main ingredients: Banana flower accord – Trio of jasmine 20% concentration / Medium Aura* – lasts up to 30 hours

As this is a Dawn scent, it is fashioned to be light and graceful. There’s a bouquet here that underscores an aroma of fragrant, fruity, aromatic, and woody scented notes that are at once sensual, natural, and elegant. While banana and jasmine are not considered olfactive siblings, they do share some olfactory similarities. Jasmine has a sensual, musky undertone and is a complex floral scent, while banana is a simple, fruity scent. So, they make a good contrast that works beautifully. An elegant Chypre, though not a classic Chypre. It gives off a bit of that sophisticated, special occasion vibe. Inspired by Josephine Baker.

INFINIMENT COTY PARIS I am Day Entre Genres (Nathalie Lorson): Olfactory family: Musk overdose / Main ingredients: Trio of musks – Tangerine 20% concentration / Intimate Aura* – lasts up to 30 hours

You love musk? No? Step off. Yes? Well, join me in exploring Entre Genres’ three-pronged musk attack. Too much musk? So, what will cool the musk? A frizzante of tangerine at the top. Don’t believe I’ve encountered them together like this. I find the fragrance balanced between bold and elegant, calming and relaxing. And, bewitching due to the white blossom. And there’s a greenness from the tea that keeps it in check. The parting musk leaves a sensual warmth. Overall, well blended. I’m loving it.

INFINIMENT COTY PARIS  I am Dusk: Après L’Amour (Fabrice Pellegrin): Olfactory family: Aphrodisiac ambery / Main ingredients: Tobacco accord – Cistus labdanum 20% concentration / Intense Aura* – lasts up to 30 hours

There is a saying, The Night Time Is the Right Time. Well, this sexy nighttime amber has red lipstick written all over it. Smoky, sweet, and sensual, this feminine-leaning fragrance blends a striking tobacco note with a vivacious ginger in a way that gives off a mysteriously elegant dimension to it. The labdanum closes the whole affair with an affectionate hug that speaks of warmth and charm. Careful, you might lose your heart over this one.

Since opening the location, INFINIMENT COTY PARIS has been hosting several Introduction Events. I attended a recent cocktail party and workshop, led by 1-54 Founder Touria El Glaoui and Brand Experts. Much of what I gleaned here came from this fabulous event.
