Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and state minister Hafizul Hassan sparked a controversy on Friday by issuing a warning that Muslims could take to the streets and “resort to violence” if provoked—making a veiled reference to the amended Waqf Act.

In a sharp rebuttal, the BJP strongly condemned the minister’s provocative remarks and accused the Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led party of being a “destroyer of the Constitution”. The saffron party also called the JMM leader a “serial offender.”

“Muslims are showing patience, but if disturbed, we will take to the streets, and violence will erupt — there will be chaos,” the minister warned, using the phrase “maar kaat hoga” to emphasise the potential unrest.

Earlier, Hassan had sparked another political row by saying that Shariat comes first for a Muslim and then the Constitution of the country.

“Shariat hamare liye bada hai. Hum Quran seene mein rakhte hain aur haath me samvidhaan. Islam mein Shariat ko pehle pakdenge fir samvidhaan ko. (Shariat is bigger for us. Quran is there in our hearts and the Constitution in our hands. In Islam, first it is Shariat, then the Constitution comes),” he told a news channel in a clip shared by the Jharkhand BJP.

BJP Hits Back

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla labelled the JMM as a “destroyer of the Constitution,” and demanded an immediate removal of the minister from the state cabinet.

“Hafizul Hassan is a serial offender. A week ago, he said that for him, Sharia is above the Constitution. Now, he says that: ‘You have disturbed the Muslims by bringing the Waqf Amendment Act. We will come out on the streets and beat people up. Muslims have patience, but they are not in the grave.’ A person who says such things, are they the protectors of the Constitution, are they the destroyers of the Constitution?” the BJP leader asked.

He also accused the Congress and INDI alliance of inciting violence in West Bengal following protests over the Waqf Amendment Act.

“One thing is clear that violence against Hindus across the country, especially in West Bengal, in the name of Waqf is being incited by Congress, INDI alliance parties,” he alleged.

Protests in West Bengal against the Waqf (Amendment) Act turned violent in regions such as Murshidabad and Bhangar in South 24 Parganas. Reports indicate that protesters clashed with security forces and set fire to police vehicles. At least three people were killed.
