It’s pleasing to see that Nicolai are enjoying increasing success and acclaim in the UK at the moment. Goodness knows, we could certainly do with a few more perfumers possessed of the skills and elegance of Patricia De Nicolai. Following on from my recent review of the brand’s new Harrods exclusive, Patchouli Spirit (click here to read and watch it), I recently presented a Love At First Scent showcase of a few Nicolai scents in my collection that I’d never discussed before. There were also reviews of new releases from Parfums De Marly, 27 87, Lancome and Pigmentarium. Here are links to both videos: Parfums De Marly Castley, 27 87 Hakuna Matata, Lancome Absolue – Rose From The Dark, Pigmentarium Brutal reviewsNicolai showcase review.

If you believe in hype and you’re convinced that banana is THE hot note in perfumery right now, then you could do a lot worse than trying 27 87 Hakuna Matata. In the talented hands of Rodrigo Flores-Roux, the greenness of the material is tied to the indolic aspects of jasmine and a honeyed base to create an intriguing, bright-and-murky nouveau chypre. In a more retro vein is Pigmentarium Brutal, where the florals of Dior Poison (tuberose, gardenia) are presented in smile-inducing, if not terribly long-lasting fashion.

As for Nicolai, I think all I need to add to the content of the video is that everyone ought to treat themselves to the brand’s very reasonably-priced discovery set. There may be a few duds here and there (I am yet to be convinced by last year’s gourmand trio) but overall, De Nicolai’s collection represents the very best of classical French perfumery: rich, detailed and nearly always a joy to wear.
