Amongst the circles inhabited by people who read posts like this one, the words ‘retro’ and ‘vintage’ tend to be used as compliments. A perfume is praised if it nods towards the aesthetics of previous decades. But sometimes, an insistence on adhering to older codes results in scents that get stuck in the past, rather than reinventing what has come before and making it relevant to contemporary audiences. This is what was on my mind as I worked my way through the works currently under the banner of Thomas De Monaco.
