Two children were rescued from a burning residential building in Ahmedabad’s Khokhra area on Friday, after a woman passed them through a staircase balcony to two men on the floor below.
A video of the dramatic rescue has gone viral on social media. The footage shows thick black smoke in the background as the woman, standing with two children and another woman, carefully lowers the children through the staircase balcony without any safety equipment.
The men below, standing on the floor beneath, catch the children and bring them to safety.
Moments later, the same woman tries to climb down through the narrow opening herself. She nearly slips, but the men quickly grab her legs and pull her to safety.
According to officials, at least 18 people were rescued after the fire broke out in the multi-storey residential building on Friday afternoon.
The fire started around 3:30 pm and was brought under control by 6:00 pm, according to the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES).
No casualties have been reported.
Deputy Fire Officer Rameshpuri Goswami said the fire started in the wire duct that runs from the ground floor to the top of the building.
“Smoke filled the passages, making it difficult for residents to come out of their flats. After reaching the spot, we rescued 18 residents and brought the fire under control. No one was injured in the incident,” Goswami added.
