Canon has finally opened up its RF mount to third-party lens manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron, marking a significant shift after years of it being “closed.” Sigma’s introduction includes six “Contemporary” lenses already popular in other mirrorless mounts, while Tamron kicks off with the 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD for Canon RF.

Sigma ensures full support for its lenses on Canon RF, integrating advanced autofocus algorithms and communication optimizations. Tamron’s decision to develop for Canon RF stems from customer demand, with the promise of a compact yet powerful 11-20mm f/2.8 zoom lens expected to hit the market in 2024. While Canon’s strategy of licensing access to RF mount for APS-C cameras remains, this move marks a significant step towards meeting user demands and broadening the lens options available for Canon mirrorless users.
