England announced their playing XI for the first Test match against India at Headingley, which begins on Friday.
All-rounder Chris Woakes is set to return to the team for the first time since December. Additionally, pacer Brydon Carse will play his first Test match on home soil, having previously participated in five Tests in Pakistan and New Zealand.
Pope In, Wait For Bethel
England vice-captain Ollie Pope will hold his position at number three, which means rising star Jacob Bethell will have to wait for his return to red-ball internationals.
The pair were competing for the same spot in the opening match of the five-Test series.
Bethell had made a strong impression during the New Zealand tour in November and December, while Pope reinforced his credentials with an innings of 171 against Zimbabwe last month.
In his debut series against New Zealand, Bethell shone by scoring three half-centuries, including a notable innings of 96, while batting at number three.
However, vice-captain Pope, who played as a middle-order batter in that series, is now set to be promoted to number three following his 171-run knock in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.
Bethell had missed the Test against Zimbabwe because he was playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League.
