Infosys Layoffs: IT major Infosys has terminated the services of 240 trainees after they failed to clear the company’s internal assessment despite multiple chances. According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), the decision was communicated via internal emails on April 18 after the trainees failed to meet the qualifying criteria in the company’s ‘Generic Foundation Training Program’. Even after additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, mock assessments, and three attempts, the trainees were unable to pass.
It comes a day after Infosys on April 17 posted a 11.7 per cent YoY decline in its net profit to Rs 7,033 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2025 quarter (Q4 FY25).
The termination email accessed by TOI stated, “You have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program.”
In a move to soften the impact of the layoffs, Infosys has extended several support initiatives for the affected trainees. The company is offering free upskilling programmes through partnerships with NIIT and UpGrad, aiming to prepare these individuals for potential roles in the BPM industry or to help them continue honing their IT skills. These training opportunities are also being offered to those who were laid off in February.
In February, Infosys sacked over 300 trainees at its Mysuru campus as they failed assessment test. This was about half of the trainees onboarded in October 2024. Following this, over 100 of these trainees approached the Prime Ministers Office seeking its intervention to restore their employment. In a letter to the PMO, Infosys’ sacked employees also urged the PMO to take measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
In its latest internal communication, Infosys said it would provide professional outplacement services to assist the trainees in exploring external job opportunities. Additionally, trainees can opt for Infosys-sponsored external programs in either BPM-specific training or IT fundamentals. On successful completion, candidates may reapply for roles within Infosys BPM.
Besides training, Infosys is also extending financial support. Impacted trainees will receive one month’s salary, accommodation, and a travel allowance from the company’s Mysore training facility to either Bengaluru or their hometowns.
According to Moneycontrol, around 730 trainees from the October 2024 batch took their third and final assessment on April 17. The results of the next batch were expected next week. Many of these trainees had been waiting for more than two years to be onboarded, as hiring was delayed due to a macroeconomic slowdown that affected client spending. These trainees were originally recruited for roles such as System Engineers and Digital Specialist Engineers.
