Suryakumar Yadav, the senior-most among the three Yadavs on the park, and Ryan Rickelton set the tone for the day before Jasprit Bumrah & Co. floored the opposition to help Mumbai Indians roll over Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs and register its fifth consecutive win in the Indian Premier League’s 18th edition.

Suryakumar and Rickelton’s quickfire fifties ensured Mumbai Indians piled on 215 for seven to enthral 19,000 schoolkids watching the proceedings at the Wankhede Stadium, as part of the team’s promoter’s initiative, on a sultry Sunday afternoon.

Bumrah then made it count as an Impact Player as the seasoned pro returned with his best figures of the season. With Trent Boult being equally effective and Will Jacks’ golden arm with his off-spinners doing the trick yet again, Super Giants folded for 161 in the last over.

Earlier, after Rickelton had dominated the PowerPlay before slashing leggie Digvesh Rathi to point, Suryakumar took charge in the middle overs.

While Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya struggled to get going at the other end after Will Jacks was undone by Prince Yadav, Suryakumar was into his element.

Late flourish

His overhead hook off Prince’s medium-pace was the shot of the day. Despite Suryakumar’s knock making him the highest run-getter of the season, MI was in danger of ending up with a sub-par total. However, cameos from Naman Dhir and debutant Corbin Bosch meant it comfortably crossed the 200-run mark, with the former ending the innings with a ramp shot for a six.

Rickelton and Surya negated Mayank Yadav’s good work on his return after seven months.

He dismissed Rohit — who hit consecutive sixes off the first two balls — off a wide one and then sneaked through Hardik’s defence at the start of the death overs.

Jacks makes an impact

Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran kept LSG in the hunt in the PowerPlay before Jacks turned the tide in the seventh over.

The off spinner got rid of Pooran (mistimed to long-off for Suryakumar to complete the catch) and captain Rishabh Pant (miscued reverse-sweep) to virtually seal the deal. The door was shut when Bumrah accounted for Abdul Samad and David Miller.
