LSG Knocked Out Of IPL 2025 Playoffs Race After Big Defeat To SRH

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) became the fifth team to get knocked out of the IPL 2025 playoffs race after their 6-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday (May 19) at their home, the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
With just 10 points after 12 matches, they can now only reach a maximum of 14 points this season, which won’t be enough to get them to the final spot remaining — fourth. Mumbai Indians are on 14 points too, and Delhi Capitals are on 13 points, but they have one match to play against each other — which means at least one of them will go past 14 points irrespective of the result (including a washout).
The best LSG can finish, then, is fifth. It’s now on DC and MI to fight it out for the final spot available.
In the first innings, openers Mitchell Marsh (65 off 39) and Aiden Markram (61 off 38) struck high-quality fifties but regular wickets from SRH’s bowlers stemmed the flow of runs to limit LSG to 205/7. Abhishek Sharma smashed half a dozen sixes in his 20-ball 59 to set-up the change. And although Digvesh Rathi took two wickets, Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 28) and Kamindu Mendis (32 off 21) saw off the chase.
“Definitely it could have been one of our best seasons but coming into the tournament, we had a lot of gaps, injuries and as a team we decided to not talk about that, but it became difficult to fill those gaps for us,” skipper Rishabh Pant said in the post-match presentation. “The way we planned the auction, if we had had the same bowling. But this is cricket, sometimes things go your way and sometimes they don’t, we take pride in the way we played and take the positives from the season than the negative side. We have a strong batting line up, have enough firepower and that is the biggest positive for the season, even for bowlers, a lot of times they bowled in good areas but they were patchy.”
LSG have two matches remaining this season — against Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, both teams that have qualified for the playoffs.
