Manish Malhotra Recalls His First Filmfare Win For Best Costume Design In 1995

Manish Malhotra, a prominent name in Indian fashion, has completed 35 years in the industry, working as a costume designer, stylist and fashion designer, including the introduction of his couture label in 2005. A while ago, the ace designer took a stroll down memory lane and recalled his first Filmfare win for Best Costume Designer in 1995 for actress Urmila Matondkar’s outfits in the movie Rangeela.
Taking to Instagram, Manish dropped a post reminiscing about the good old days. It featured a throwback monochrome picture of the designer holding the winner’s trophy.
The next post is a throwback video of the anchor announcing Manish’s name as the first-ever Filmfare Best Costume Design award winner. As the clip progresses, we see veteran actress Rekha presenting the award to him.
Lastly, Manish shared a heartfelt note that reads, “My first Filmfare came with Rangeela. The same year, they decided to introduce the Best Costume Design category. It felt like the industry was finally beginning to see the costume not just as clothing, but as storytelling.”
Sharing the post, he wrote in the caption, “The first-ever Filmfare Award (@filmfare) for Costume Design. It feels so nostalgic.”
In no time, the comment section was flooded with reactions from his fans and industry friends. Urmila Matondkar dropped a number of red heart emoticons. Actress Bhumi Pednekar commented, “You look the same MM.” An Instagram user wrote, “Perhaps the most talented designer in the fashion industry.” One of them shared, “Amazing. What a journey!!! And still rocking.”

In September 2023, he announced his own production banner, STAGE5 Production. Some of the films under his banner are Saali Mohabbat, featuring Radhika Apte and Divyenndu Shamra; Bun Tikki starring Abhay Deol, Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman; and Ul Jalool Ishq with Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
