In a move that could significantly reshape the electric mobility landscape, the Delhi government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is preparing to roll out an ambitious new incentive aimed squarely at women buyers of electric two-wheelers. According to sources familiar with the plan, the forthcoming Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 will offer a subsidy of up to Rs 36,000 for electric scooters and bikes purchased in a woman’s name.
The initiative, still in its preparatory stages, is expected to be limited initially to the first 10,000 eligible women. To qualify, applicants must hold a valid driving license, and the subsidy will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The financial assistance will be calculated at a rate of Rs 12,000 per kilowatt-hour of battery capacity, capped at a maximum of Rs 36,000. The subsidy will only apply to electric two-wheelers priced at Rs 4.5 lakh or less.
Crucially, this new benefit will not be stackable with other government EV subsidies – those who opt in will be excluded from additional support programs.
While the scheme is yet to be formally announced, its outline signals a strategic shift in how the government is seeking to accelerate EV adoption while simultaneously reinforcing its political commitment to women’s welfare. The Gupta-led BJP government has, since taking office, launched a flurry of women-centric programs – from free LPG cylinders to Rs 25,000 payouts for pregnant women, housing initiatives, and monthly stipends of Rs 2,500 for every woman in the city.
This new policy appears to be another calculated step in that direction, combining the twin goals of environmental sustainability and gender empowerment.
The scheme is proposed to remain in effect until March 31, 2030, and may be expanded in future phases to include electric three-wheelers and commercial vehicles registered in women’s names. If successfully implemented, it could bolster Delhi’s fight against pollution while providing a financial nudge for families to register electric bikes under the names of wives, sisters, or mothers.
